When I get back to the flat, Sam and Tom are thick as thieves, watching some movie on Netflix. I make my excuses and head to Sam’s room. Tom doesn’t seem to notice my appearance, and Carla only calls out a greeting as I pass the kitchen door. For a second, I’m tempted to tell her everything, but what good would it do? Like Sam, she’ll only suggest going to the police, and that’s not an option. I’ve no real evidence of Bella’s plans, no proof that Dad’s in danger – and none that he’s innocent either.

I take a shower and gaze at myself in the glass. Mirror Me is still there, looking back. I drink in my reflection, drowning out Jake’s hurt, Sam’s disapproval.

Perfect.

I can’t get enough.

But how long will the magic last?

I find out the next day.

I wake up feeling groggy, body aching and head throbbing like I’m coming down with something. Sam is still fast asleep. I drag myself to the bathroom, then I see.

I’m me again.

Familiar, flawed Freya.

Dismay punches me in the gut. I limp back to bed, wallowing in self-pity. I need it. I need the mirror. The craving is alarming. In spite of the problems being perfect caused, I’m desperate to see Mirror Me again.

I reach for my phone.

Saskia’s socials – I can check them. She’s bound to have posted that picture. I scroll through her feed, searching.

There.

I shiver. The photo was shared yesterday afternoon, but the likes and comments are still coming in. Hundreds of people from school, from everywhere – all gushing and fawning over Saskia, Ruby, Lila…

And me.
